In November of 2022 I participated in my first NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). The result was 50,000 words of a book titled Pond by the Sea. It’s an allegorical story about a duck. Except the duck is me. I’m not committing to another go round of NaNoWriMo this year, but figured posting excerpts here would be a good way to feed two birds with one scone. Pun intended.
“The Crash”
Still waters adorned with silent leaves greeted us in the morning. A few small tree limbs lay scattered across the ground, torn down by the gales of the night. None of us had been hurt, but all were shaken. “I think you should head out for one last test flight today, Blue.” D said as the Wigeon flock paddled near the shore. Feathered tails bobbed up towards the sky and back down as they fed. The normalcy of it made my heart ache.
